Debating is a wonderful way to shore up your speaking skills and to build confidence in yourself. It also helps you learn about yourself, think on your feet and learn how to take a stand on controversial issues. So let's get to it!
Directions: Teachers, establish sides of your room as AGREE and DISAGREE. Set up classroom norms for debate...
Norm #1: BE RESPECTFUL! Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Norm # 2: No need to raise hands, but DO NOT interrupt or speak over anyone who has the floor.
Norm #3: Following each statement or question read, you will pick your side and have 2 minutes to discuss with your constituents why you agree or disagree.
Norm #4: Each side will get a turn. Be patient and respect the other side.
Norm #5: Use friendly language: no accusations, no derogatory names or terms, no cussing. Be thoughtful and appropriate with your words.
Norm #6: HAVE FUN :)

TEACHERS: post the slide show below on your board for students to see while participating in today's activity. If you make it through all of the topics, allow students to volunteer topics they want to discuss.
