Create small groups of 3 and analyze the text set above...What does it mean to be functionally illiterate? What issues/obstacles do we face in getting young people to read? How does one's economic status affect his/her literacy level & abilities? Discuss the cost of low literacy... what does that mean? What is the "summer slide"? How does it affect a student's performance? How can we close the achievement gaps? ...COME BACK TOGETHER AS A CLASS.What was one thing that stood out to your group about the infographic and what did your group discuss in regards to that information?Give each group an opportunity to share a significant point of their discussion. Once each group as shared, view the following video. Discuss your biggest take-aways from this video as a class.
